St. Joseph's Church

History

Church History

Originally a part of St. Michan’s Parish, the Berkeley Road area saw its first place of worship with the erection of a wooden chapel-of-ease in 1870. This modest structure was replaced by a distinctive granite church in 1880, reflecting the growing community's needs and aspirations.

In 1890, the parish of Berkeley Road was officially established, marking its new identity with the construction of the north-western tower in 1893. This architectural addition symbolized the parish’s expansion and dedication to its mission.

The parish was entrusted to the Discalced Carmelites in July 1983, who brought a rich tradition of spirituality and service. While the Carmelite stewardship has concluded, the church continues to thrive as a diocesan parish, upholding its heritage and serving the community with renewed vigor and faith.
